Healthy Spot - Taking the Guesswork Out of Dog Care

By Maryanne O'Brien

What would possess the co-owner of Healthy Spot, a successful young advertising executive, to ditch the prosperity and security of a lucrative media-buying career to venture into the uncharted territory of a retail business? It must be love! And her name is Maya, the part Shih Tzu, part terrier, part mystery dog that Andrew rescued from a trip to the pound when the dog’s parents, personal friends of Mark, realized they would have to put her up for adoption.
Like many new dog owners, Mark Boonnark bought the most expensive “premium” dog food he could find at a chain pet-supply store. If it’s the most expensive, it must be the best, right? Wrong! Wanting to take the guesswork out of doing right by Maya, Mark immediately consulted his sister, an experienced dog owner. She explained to him that most mass-marketed pet-food brands, even those that claim to be “premium,” contain low quality ingredients, byproducts, fillers, synthetic preservatives, artificial colors, and artificial flavors.
Sure enough, the brand Mark had originally chosen wound up on the FDA’s massive pet-food recall list in 2007. The FDA pulled a large number of pet-food brands off the shelves because “certain pet foods were sickening and killing cats and dogs” due to the presence of botulinum toxin.
The frightening reality of the mass-market pet-food industry compelled Mark and co-owner Andrew Kim to research and create the consummate retail experience for dog lovers, those who want to do the very best for their dogs but need help and guidance figuring out exactly how to do that. The Healthy Spot mission is to instill 100-percent consumer confidence in every person who shops at the store. Mark likens the experience to that of shopping at Whole Foods Market. “Consumers who shop at Whole Foods Market don’t worry about the quality or safety of the products they find there because they trust Whole

Foods’ commitment to carry only the highest quality organic and raw foods.”

Boonnark and Kim want their customers to have the same confidence in Healthy Spot. Healthy Spot carries all-natural organic and raw dog foods that utilize the highest quality human-grade sources of protein. Research studies have identified a possible link between inferior dog foods loaded with artificial preservatives and additives to serious canine skin allergies. There is also anecdotal data to support the theory that switching to all-natural organic or raw dog foods may alleviate these allergies.
Healthy Spot’s expansive storefront at Wilshire and 11th Street in Santa Monica is bright and airy and artfully designed in the contemporary style. It is a very fun place to browse for both owners and pets alike, with eye-catching displays of colorful toys, treats, clothing, and accessories, all reflecting the Healthy Spot commitment to quality and safety. They also offer professional services, including spa treatments, grooming services, puppy preschool, and small dog daycare.
The team at Healthy Spot pride themselves on offering a wide variety of products and services to suit the specific needs and sets of circumstances of each individual dog and owner. In this way, Healthy Spot can truly be your one-stop shop for all aspects of your dog’s care. Go in for a visit, and when you make your purchase, consider participating in their “Make a Change” program. If you agree to round up your total to the next dollar, Healthy Spot donates the extra change to support the Walk for the Underdog, a grassroots organization that supports rescue groups dedicated to finding loving homes for dogs.
